Introduction: The Achille Ratti Hut situated on A591 just below and to the south of the crest of Dunmail Raise . The hut is superbly positioned for outings either to Hellvelyn & Fairfield to the East; or outings to High Raise, the Langdales or Scafell to the West. We have sole occupancy of the hut but need a good turn-out (20+) to avoid making a loss. Please book early!
History: Dunmail Raise was the scene of a bloody battle for control of the lands of Cumbria. The battle took place against King Dunmail, the last King of Cumbria, against the united forces of Malcolm, the King of Scotland and Edmund, a Saxon King. Dunmail was defeated and slain and his sons were mutilated, his men were made to build a stone cairn over the spot where he fell. Traditionally King Dunmail's golden crown was supposed to have been thrown into Grisedale Tarn and has never been recovered.
Activities: The activities for the meet will depend on the weather conditions. Be prepared for snow/ice, torrential rain or sunshine. I will lead a long-ish expedition on Saturday and a mountain bike route on Sunday, for those who wish to be led. On Sunday, I plan to do the 10ml North Face mountain bike ride in the Grisedale Forest. See URL for further details: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-69hbp2
Directions: From the North: head West along the A66 from the M6 Junction 40 at Penrith. At Threlkeld turn South onto the B5322. Join the A591 at Legburthwaite. The hut is 8km South of the junction ¾ km after passing the crest of Dunmail Raise on the LHS. From the South: Travel along the A591 from Windermere and head for Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick. After leaving Grasmere, the hut can be found 3km along the road which climbs to Dunmail raise, 3/4km before the crest on the RHS.
PS (ed.). The Achille Ratti Climbing Club was founded by Bishop T.B. Pearson in 1940 and named after Monsignor Achille Ratti, a parish priest in Northern Italy who was an accomplished climber. Monsignor Achille Ratti later became Pope Pius X1.
